Health and Life Column: CINNAMON

By Fr. Tony Ogwu (OCD)

Cinnamon is a herb that is known as a flavouring spice in cooking. Its properties enables it to bring healing to many people from ancient times till now. Cinnamon has anti-inflamatory, anti- bacteria, anti-viral, and antioxidant properties. For this reasons, cinnamon has been beneficial for the treatment of various ailments like diabetes, joint conditions, high blood pressure and helpful in flavouring numerous alcoholic beverages.
True cinnamon (Cinnamon umzaylandica) has a more delicate and finer flavour than cassia which comes from cinnamon cassia. Both type of cinnamon can be sold under the name of cinnamon. They are obtained from bark. The bark is stripped from shoots of cinnamon trees that have been forced to root-sprout in order to produce the quills or curls of cinnamon sold whole or ground. The outer bark of true cinnamon is then rooted from the inner bark while the cleaned inner bark is dried making it to curl into tight, red-brown quills. The cassia is obtained in this same way except that the outer bark is not stripped away. This makes cassia to be much coarser than cinnamon.
